The lack of one or more teeth can lead to the need for the installation of a dental implant. That is, of a structure of false teeth, usually in resin or ceramic, fixed on titanium posts that are fixed in the bones. This is the best and most practical solution when you have missing teeth. The Characteristics of a Dental Implant
Dental implants are part of restorative dentistry. They help to restore some of the aesthetics and functionality in your mouth after losing some, or all, of your teeth. We put a titanium implant into your jaw, then we leave it to fuse with your jawbone. From there, we apply the false tooth to the top and you get to return to eating and smiling like normal. We typically use surgery to install the posts, but each patient’s experience is unique, so we may need to do something different for you and it will depend on your circumstances. Typically, when we put in a dental implant, we expect them to last at least 10-15 years, but in situations where they are well taken care of, they can easily last the rest of a patient’s life.
The Types of Dental Implant
There are three main types of dental implants. The first is a single tooth implant. This is used when just one tooth is missing. The next is the same as a dental bridge. This is when there are 2-4 teeth in the same spot that are missing. Finally, there are full arch implants. These cover a full arch of teeth, either the top arch or the bottom. Many people get what is called an All on 4 implant, which allows us to place a full arch of teeth on just four implant posts.
Preparation for a Dental Implant
If there are no bone problems and you are suitable for the installation of a dental implant, the first thing to do is to undergo an X-ray of the mouth. It is a necessary examination to know the anatomical information of the mouth. That way, when your implants are created, they match how your mouth is set up.
From there, we will install the posts into your jaw. Then, we cap them off with temporary crowns until the posts fuse with the surrounding bone. Once the healing is complete, we will have you come in and get the permanent implant that will attach to your implant. We will adjust it so that it sits comfortable atop your implants, and then you get to return to eating your favorite foods and smiling without feeling awkward.
