Cone Beam CT machine. At Pacific Maxillofacial Center we stay up-to-date on all the latest, proven dental technology. We have a few impressive pieces of technology in our office, one of which is our cone beam CT scanner. You are probably familiar with x-ray technology, which gives us a window into your bone structure, well the cone beam CT scanner functions on this same basic principle of showing us more detail of your mouth. Cone beam CT’s give us a much more detailed and impressive look at the inside of your mouth and the structures within.

What Is a Cone Beam CT?

A cone beam CT scanner is a unique device in both form and function. You will be able to spot it in our office by its unique silhouette – slim at the base and taller than the average person with a large arm that juts out from the leg above head height. Despite it being a CT scanner, it is far different from a medical grade CT scanner as it is intended to scan only the mouth, head and, neck. The cone beam CT scanner also exposes the patient to roughly ten times less radiation than a medical grade CT scan, keeping our patients safe from overexposure to radiation.

The device is made with a radial arm that swivels around the head as the patient stands still. This allows the cone beam CT scanner to collect imaging data from every angle of your mouth. The scanner compiles this information into a single, three-dimensional image of your mouth that we can use to identify oral health issues. Not only can we use these images to diagnose oral health issues, but we can also use it to create a treatment plan for you.

When The Cone Beam CT Is Useful

At Pacific Maxillofacial Center, our goal is always to give our patients the most successful treatment at the best value. It may not always be necessary to use the cone beam CT if a digital x-ray suffices. Procedures where a cone beam CT proves to be the most useful tool are typically:
•  Dental implant cases
•  Complex dental implant planning
•  Wisdom teeth
•  Extra teeth
•  Oral pathology
•  Facial trauma

There are several different varieties of film that we can utilize to take images of your mouth, each with their own unique advantages. Generally speaking, they fall into the categories of intraoral, panoramic, and cone beam. Each category typically has a 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional option that can be used depending on what we need to view or plan.

Some practices will suggest that you need a cone beam CT before any procedure, which simply isn’t true. Often a digital x-ray will suffice and end up costing you less. At Pacific Maxillofacial Center you can trust that we will always recommend only what you need.

We are always happy to answer any question that you have regarding any procedure or device in our office. The more you know, the more comfortable you will feel and that’s important to us. Call us today at 808-585-8455 to schedule your consultation.
