How To Tell If You Have an Oral Abscess

Posted on 12/23/2021 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
How To Tell If You Have an Oral AbscessAn oral abscess is a pocket of pus that forms in parts of your mouth. This condition mainly affects your teeth and the adjacent jaw. An oral abscess is mainly caused by bacteria that accumulate in your mouth. It is important to treat an oral abscess on time because it can advance and cause serious tooth loss. Therefore, you need to know the signs of an oral abscess so that you seek treatment as early as possible. Here are some symptoms of an oral abscess.

Consistent Tooth Pain

If you have a consistent toothache, you could be having an oral abscess. A throbbing toothache mostly characterizes this pain felt in the jawbone, ear, or neck. It can get very uncomfortable, especially when eating or drinking. In some cases, the pain gets too intense that you can't eat or talk. If you are experiencing such kind of toothache, you should come in for immediate treatment. It is important to note that OTC medications cannot cure toothaches caused by an oral abscess. Such medications can only relieve the pain for a short time, but the pain will always come back. Therefore, seeing our professionals for advanced treatment is important.

Tooth Sensitivity

Another sign of oral abscess is tooth sensitivity. If you notice a sharp pain when your teeth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures, it could be a sign of an oral abscess. This happens because the enamel is damaged. The enamel is a tough protective layer that keeps the inner part of your tooth safe. However, oral abscess damages the enamel and exposes a sensitive part of your tooth called the dentin. Therefore, when you expose it to hot or cold beverages, you will experience a sharp pain. In such a case, you should visit our offices for further examination. Contact our offices for more information on an oral abscess.
