What You Need to Know About a Bone Graft Procedure

Posted on 10/11/2021 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
What You Need to Know About a Bone Graft ProcedureHaving a few missing teeth is a common dental condition for adults. Dental implants are the best option to permanently replace lost teeth when this happens either because of decay or injury. This procedure involves drilling a titanium implant into the jaw bone. If there is excessive bone structure loss, we recommend a bone graft to our patients. A dental bone graft is a procedure that regenerates or replaces the lost bone. It helps provide a firm foundation to support artificial teeth.

What the Bone Graft Procedure Entails

Before we start a bone graft, we give our patients local anesthesia to deal with the pain. During this procedure, our team of professionals removes a small piece of bone material from another part of the body and places it in the jawbone. These days, bone material from a cadaver or animal body part is also sufficient as a foundation for dental implants. After this procedure, it takes a few months for the transplanted bone to fuse with your jawbone. When it does, our team proceeds to place the dental implants in the more healthy jaw bone.

What to Expect After a Bone Graft Procedure

Healing from a dental bone graft procedure can take anywhere between two weeks and three months, depending on your oral health. After the first 48 hours after the procedure, the swelling reduces. You can use a warm cloth on your face to ease the pain in the jaw. These symptoms disappear after a few weeks. While recovering, you will not be able to eat solid foods. We recommend changing your diet to soft foods that do not pressure the teeth or jaw.

Practicing good oral hygiene, like gentle brushing, increases the recovery rate. If you have any inquiries about a bone graft procedure, call us to book a consultative appointment.
