Reasons Your Jaw May Hurt by the End of the Day

Reasons Your Jaw May Hurt by the End of the DayVarious types of jaw pains can be extremely uncomfortable, to the extent that they may affect your ability to speak and eat. There are many causes of jaw pain, from ear and sinuses issues to your teeth and jaw itself. Given the many causes, it can be difficult to tell the exact cause of the pain. Here are some of the reasons why your jaw may hurt.

Temporomandibular Joint and Muscle Disorder

TMD is by far the most common cause of jaw pain. Also referred to as TMJ, TMD affects at least two out of fifteen people. It is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joints, the hinge joints on each side of your jaw. To protect yourself, you must know the different causes of TMD jaw pain. It is also possible to experience this condition due to different causes occurring at the same time. The most common cause of TMJ is a displaced disc that helps cushion your jaw movements. In most cases, it is arthritis that displaces the protective disc to cushion the jaw joint. This will make you experience persistent jaw pain. You could also experience pain from the muscles that control jaw movement.

Apart from damage to the jaw joints, the muscles tasked with controlling jaw movement can also sustain damage. Damage to these areas can be caused by activities like grinding your teeth at night or engaging in physical activities such as martial arts. When you clench your teeth too hard, these muscles will sustain significant damage. You can also experience damage to your jaw muscles when there is trauma to the jaw joint, such as sustaining face injuries when playing. All these factors can lead to jaw pain and discomfort.
