Can You Ignore Bruxism Symptoms?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
Can You Ignore Bruxism Symptoms?Bruxism, a condition in which individuals' clench or gnash their teeth, may affect individuals subconsciously when asleep, but it manifests when they are awake in some. If you suffer from this condition while conscious, it will be easy to tell and seek medical attention. However, if it presents itself when you are asleep, it may be difficult for you to know unless your partner tells you or you experience other bruxism symptoms. Symptoms of bruxism can be uncomfortable, but it is possible to ease the discomfort and lead a normal life if treated early.

Symptoms of Bruxism

If you suffer from bruxism, teeth grinding is a major symptom. Teeth grinding in individuals with bruxism can be so loud that it wakes up their partners. Continuous grinding wears out the tooth enamel over time and exposes the tooth's inner layer, resulting in tooth sensitivity to temperature. The teeth will also appear flattened or chipped as a result of the wear. Tooth grinding also causes temporomandibular disorders, including jaw pain and soreness on the neck and face muscles. Eventually, you will start experiencing headaches and earaches from this pain. Therefore, it is essential to check in with our specialists for treatment.

When to See Us

Seeking treatment for bruxism prevents you from suffering more serious health problems. If you consciously grind your teeth, you should see us immediately, and we will recommend a mouthguard to prevent further teeth damage. Other treatment options we offer include behavioral therapy, where we teach you how to rest your tongue, lips, and teeth properly. We will also help you manage stress to prevent teeth grinding from stress and anxiety. Finally, if you suspect you have bruxism, it is important to check with us as soon as possible for diagnosis.
