When is Jaw Realignment Surgery Necessary?

Posted on 4/12/2021 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
When is Jaw Realignment Surgery Necessary?Jaw realignment surgeries are a common procedure that are performed for a variety of reasons. Some individuals opt for jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery to enhance their jawline and promote facial symmetry. In other cases, jaw surgery may be medically necessary.

When is Jaw Realignment Needed?

The jaw consists of two parts. These are the maxilla or upper jaw, and the mandible or lower jaw. If the upper and lower jaw are misaligned, they may need to be realigned to correct your bite. There are multiple types of jaw surgery procedures depending on the region being operated on. These are:

•  Maxillary Osteotomy - This surgery corrects an upper jaw that has receded, has a crossbite, or when one or too many teeth are visible.
•  Mandibular Osteotomy - This surgery corrects a lower jaw that has receded severely. This involves moving the jawbone forwards or backwards depending on the optimal alignment position.
•  Genioplasty - This procedure is performed when a deficient chin is accompanying a receded lower jaw It involves altering the jaw and restructuring the chin in the same procedure.

At Pacific Maxillofacial Center, Dr. Haruki and Dr. Oishi will examine the positions of your upper and lower jaw and perform any realignment procedures that are necessary.

How Long Does It Take to Recover From Is Jaw Realignment Surgery?

The initial recovery following jaw realignment surgery takes around six weeks. However, the full healing process may take up to twelve weeks. During this healing period you will need to maintain good oral hygiene, eat soft or mashed foods, and avoid tobacco. You may also be prescribed medication to control pain.
