Lasers in Oral Surgery

The use of lasers has been a game-changing factor in oral surgery. From increased visibility and reduction in bacteria to increased precision and faster healing, laser use in oral surgery is only expected to increase with time. The following are common oral surgeries that use laser technology.

Benign Oral Lesions

Benign oral lesions come in many forms, including fibroma, mucocele, gingival lesions, tongue lesions, papilloma, salivary glands lesions and more. By using lasers on these lesions, the removal becomes minimally invasive, less time-consuming, and reduces or eliminates the need for general anesthesia. Additionally, there will be a reduction in in-patient care, which reduces costs and saves valuable resources.

Premalignant Lesions in Oral Mucosa

These include oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus, which can occur in approximately 28% of such lesions. While traditional surgery is still used, research has shown that using lasers instead showed lower rates of recurrence. Additionally, lasers also allow for more precision and deep penetration.

Oral Cancer

Traditional treatment for oral cancer includes surgery and neo-/adjuvant therapy. However, laser surgery has now become a treatment option for both, oral cancer and well as for pre-cancerous tumors. Lasers allow for a much less invasive surgery with remote application and allow for extreme precision and accuracy. They also reduce swelling and shorten recovery time.

TMJ Surgery

Temporomandibular joint disorders can be treated with arthroscopic surgery with Er:YAG, CO2, and Ho:YAG lasers. Using these lasers can make procedures like discoplasty, hemostatis, eminectomy, discectomy, and synvectomy much faster and less invasive.
