Why Do Some People Get Lumps in the Roof of Their Mouth?

Why a Lump Can Develop in the Palate

Several types of nodules can form in the roof of the mouth, most of which are harmless. For example, a bony growth in the middle of the palate, known as Torus palatinus, may form and vary in size. This bony growth, which is benign, usually appears when a person is a young adult. This growth reveals itself as a hard lump in the center of the mouth and can be either smooth or lumpy. It usually grows gradually throughout a person's life. While most cases of this bony growth do not require treatment, surgery may be needed if the growth is large. Canker sores may also develop on the mouth's roof, as well as the inside of the lips and cheeks. The sores usually fade after about 5 to 10 days. While cold sores usually appear on the lips, they can also appear on the roof of the mouth. Instead of a growth, they usually appear as a painful blister. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus and usually heal on their own.

Mucoceles

Oral mucoceles represent mucus-filled cysts that appear on the roof of the mouth. These cysts usually form after an injury, which irritates the salivary gland. These dome-shaped, fluid filled cysts can be transparent, bluish, or red in hue. They may appear in a group or by themselves. They also appear as white, rough, and scaly growths, although they are painless. Fortunately, they rupture on their own without the need for further treatment.
