If You Clenched Your Jaw During an Accident, We Need to See YouYou really don't know the trauma you may have experienced after a car accident or similar incident right away. That is why you should always call our office if you get involved in this type of mishap. It is even more critical to contact us is you clenched your jaw during impact. The following information can give you more details about how accidents, especially car accidents, can trigger a jaw pain and possible dental problems.

Types of Dental Injuries

A dental injury, especially in a car wreck, can be defined as either direct or indirect. Much depends on the force and how you were hit. A direct impact occurs when the mouth or head is struck by an object. An indirect injury happens when your mouth was open but was forced shut. Regardless of the type of impact, it can lead to some dental dilemmas. For example, if the force is great, your lower jaw can be crushed by the upper teeth. Teeth can be avulsed (knocked out of the socket, luxated (loosened), or fractured.

How We Will Diagnose any Injuries

Usually, when you sustain damage, it helps for us to schedule x-rays. X-tray images show precisely the type of damage caused and help us help you treat trauma or injuries. It is important for you to call us immediately, to ensure your oral health. Many times, patients end up, if they don't contact us right away, discovering that they have temporomandibular joint pain, or TMJ. The difference between seeing us immediately or waiting can mean the difference between saving your teeth and treating your jaw or having to get dentures.

We can help you with any dental pain, whether it is caused from trauma, direct or indirect. Again, you should never wait to see us if you have been involved in an accident. The sooner you get checked, the sooner you can remedy any problem before it gets out of hand.
