What Treatment Options We Have When You Suffer from Chronic Sinus PainChronic sinusitis is a condition that affects an estimated 30 million Americans. This condition involves the inflammation of the sinus tissues as a result of mucus and swelling buildup. In most cases, it's not a condition that lasts for very long. In such cases, it's considered as acute sinusitis. However, if the condition persists for more than 12 weeks, it can then be labeled as chronic. Accompanying the swelling is a great deal of pain and pressure in the ears, above the eyes, behind the cheeks and along the nasal cavity. For patients who are experiencing this type of pain, we have a wide array of solutions for them. These include:

Antibiotics

Sinusitis is caused by a variety of issues. One of these is a bacterial infection. In such a case, we are likely to prescribe antibiotics for you. These drugs should combat the bacteria that are causing the inflammation, thereby causing it to go down accompanied by the pain. However, you should note that only bacterial infections can be solved this way.

Decongestants

Since the accumulation of mucus in the sinus tissues might be to blame for the pain you are feeling, decongestants might be the way to go. These meds are critical in lowering the amount of mucus. These decongestants are available in the form of pills and nasal sprays. In most cases, you should feel a great relief from discomfort in a couple of days. If you don't feel any change, the problem might be a bit more advanced than we thought.

Steroids

In cases where inflammation is the problem and it's not a bacterial problem, we can recommend that you use inhaled steroids. These steroids are crucial when it comes to bringing down swelling in the afflicted areas. If the inflammation doesn't reduce in a few days, you might have to use stronger steroids taken by mouth.
Each person's case is usually different in a variety of ways. That's why you have to come in so that we can so the necessary tests to identify the root cause of the problem so that the course of treatment can be as effective as possible.
