Rare Side-Effects of Oral Surgery

Posted on 2/10/2020 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
Rare Side-Effects of Oral SurgeryIf you have found out recently that you might need to have an operation in your mouth, then you may be wondering what you should expect when it comes to the aftercare procedure.

Though many aspects are fairly common and a natural part of the healing process, there are other things that could happen that you should be aware of.

Common Side-Effects of Dental Surgery

You may already expect some tenderness, in or around the gum area, which can be handled quite nicely with over-the-counter medications. There may be pain as well, generally in the surgical site, but which could affect the entire mouth. It might make sense to expect some bleeding as well, though using sterile gauze can be used effectively to stop most of the issue. Never underestimate the benefit of a warm compress to take away much of the discomfort.

Side-Effects You Might Not Be Expecting

Though it is rare, it is always a possibility after any type of surgery to run the risk of infection. If you notice pain and swelling that lingers long after it should, or become aware that you are running a fever, it is possible you might have an infection. If there is numbness in your mouth, including your tongue and lips, you could have nerve damage, but don't worry- it will likely go away over time.

For some implants, you may need to have screws inserted into your sinus cavity, which could cause an infection. This is also possible if you have a tooth removed that opens a hole in your sinus. Least likely, but still important to be aware of, is the possibility of a jaw fracture which may require surgery to restore.

If you feel concerned that you may be experiencing any of these side effects or would like to have more information, give our office a call. We will be happy to help!
