Is It Safe to Keep Using Ice for Days After Oral Surgery?

Posted on 2/20/2020 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
Is It Safe to Keep Using Ice for Days After Oral Surgery? For many who seek out dental treatment, their primary concern might be the fear of pain that might occur during the operation or after.

In reality, there are many ways to alleviate both pain and anxiety at any stage of treatment, so it should not be a factor when it comes to receiving the oral care you need. Keep in mind, if something has been recommended for your health, such as surgery, it is for your benefit and considered the best option for you.

Surgery Aftercare and What to Expect

Depending on the procedure, there is a chance you may need surgery either through an extraction or something that might require stitches. Your face might be numb for several hours after the operation, so it is critical to be aware of what you are putting into your mouth since you may not be able to feel it.

Watch out for too hot foods or drinks, as these could not only hurt you but also disrupt the site. If you choose to hold a hot compress on the outside of your mouth to reduce inflammation, make sure you can feel it so as not to give yourself a serious burn without realizing it.

The first day, you could have some swelling and ice is a good way to help it feel better. Make sure you wait until you can feel your face before applying it, though, because it can cause some damage much like frostbite if you are not careful. The thing is, after a few days, that is when the swelling actually gets the most intense and should be expected. Ice can go a long way towards helping to reduce the discomfort you feel.

Fear of dental surgery should never be a factor in seeking out treatment when you have oral pain or need a procedure done. If you would like to talk to somebody about your concerns, please call our office and we will be happy to discuss options with you.
