If you have been injured in an accident, we're sorry that you're hurting, especially if the accident caused damage to your mouth. Mouth injuries are some of the most painful injuries you can have. If you have been injured in an accident, and you will need oral reconstruction surgery, here is some information about what that surgery might entail. Steps Towards HealingFirst, we will need to survey how much damage you have in your mouth. Depending on your injuries, we may need to take x-rays, use old photos, and make impressions of your teeth. If you have teeth that are broken or shattered, we need to remove them. We will give you anesthesia to make sure that you are pain free, and then we will remove the broken teeth. Depending on how bad the accident was, and the condition of your teeth, we may need to make incisions in your gum to get rid of parts of your tooth. We then close the incision with dissolvable stitches. After your mouth has had a chance to heal, we will then discuss your next steps, depending on how severely your mouth was injured. If you have had some bone loss, you may need a bone graft before we can reconstruct your teeth. Bone grafts will help us prepare your mouth for implants or other restorative dental procedures. We can use bone from your body, or bone from a donor to help rebuild your bones that were lost due to your injuries. Once the bone graft has healed, we can discuss restoring your teeth. The best option for tooth replacement is dental implants. Dental implants look and function like real teeth. Best of all, they allow your jawbone to maintain its shape and durability. With dental implants, we will first screw titanium screws into your gumline and allow them to heal. We then place the implant on top of the screw. Once that is done, your smile has been restored. Do you have questions about your teeth after an accident? Why not give us a call today, and schedule a consultation? |
