How to Manage Swelling Around Your TMJ

Posted on 2/2/2026 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
A man holding his jaw due to the pain from untreated complications of facial trauma.Dealing with swelling near your jaw joint can be uncomfortable and concerning. The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. Swelling in this area can arise from a number of factors, from simple muscle strain to more complex joint issues. This information will help you understand how to manage swelling and when to seek professional help.

Understanding TMJ Swelling

Swelling around the TMJ isn't always a sign of something serious, but it's important to pay attention to it. Causes can range from clenching or grinding your teeth (bruxism), which can strain the surrounding muscles, to an actual injury to the joint itself. Other potential causes include arthritis affecting the TMJ, infections, or even problems stemming from restoration dentistry procedures. Identifying the root cause is the first step in effective management.

Home Management Strategies

There are several things you can do at home to help reduce swelling and ease discomfort.

•  Rest: Just like any other joint injury, resting your jaw is crucial. Avoid chewing gum, eating hard or chewy foods, and activities that aggravate the area.
•  Ice and Heat: Applying ice packs for the first 24-48 hours can help reduce inflammation. After that, switch to moist heat. A warm compress can help relax the muscles and improve blood flow. Alternate between ice and heat as needed, listening to your body's cues.
•  Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation. Follow the instructions on the label and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
•  Gentle Jaw Exercises: Specific jaw exercises can help improve range of motion and reduce stiffness. However, it's essential to do these exercises gently and avoid pushing through any pain. Your dentist or a physical therapist can provide guidance on appropriate exercises.
•  Soft Diet: Stick to soft foods like soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. This minimizes the stress on your jaw joint while it heals.

When to Seek Professional Help

While home management strategies can be effective for mild cases of TMJ swelling, it's important to know when to seek professional help.

•  Persistent Swelling: If the swelling doesn't improve after a few days of home treatment, or if it gets worse, see your dentist or an oral surgeon.
•  Severe Pain: Intense pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter pain relievers warrants a visit to a healthcare professional.
•  Difficulty Opening or Closing Your Mouth: Limited jaw movement can be a sign of a more serious TMJ problem.
•  Clicking or Popping Sounds: While occasional clicking or popping is common, persistent or painful clicking or popping should be evaluated.
•  Dental Work Related: If the swelling occurs following dental procedures, contact your dentist.

The Importance of Good Oral Care

Maintaining good oral care is essential for overall health, including the health of your TMJ. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can help prevent infections and other issues that can contribute to TMJ problems. Additionally, if you suspect you are grinding your teeth, talk to your dentist about options like a night guard to protect your teeth and jaw joint. Proactive oral care is key to preventing and managing TMJ issues.
