Do You Get Scars from Jaw Surgery?

Posted on 9/2/2024 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
3D illustration of a mandible. No, you do not get any visible marks from maxillofacial surgery. The surgery is performed inside the mouth, leaving no visible facial marks. It can involve the upper jaw (maxilla), the lower jaw (mandible), or both, depending on your specific concerns and the individual assessment by the surgical team.

How Jaw Surgery Improves Your Looks

Jaw surgery generally improves several aspects of your smile and overall quality of life. The primary goal is to address cosmetic and functional jaw issues. Jaw surgery can move and reshape parts of your face. The surgeon may mold or shift the jawbone position based on your needs. These changes can alter parts of your lower face, potentially giving you a completely different appearance. Even though jaw surgery is often done to correct traumatic facial injuries, it can also be done for aesthetical purposes. If you are doing it for beauty, consult with your surgeon to have an idea of the expected outcome.

How Jaw Surgery Affects Your Looks

While you will not have visible marks, jaw surgery will negatively impact your looks and function for a few days. Your face will likely be swollen after the surgery. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and take medication to reduce swelling.

For the first 24 hours, you must apply ice packs to your face, 20 minutes on and 10 minutes off. Due to the swelling and the splint in your mouth, it may be hard for others to understand you, which can be frustrating.

If you have braces, you will need to keep wearing them for another six to nine months after the surgery. Once your braces are removed, you must wear removable retainers to maintain the new position of your teeth. Your healthcare provider will tell you how often to wear them, but most people need to wear them continually.

Jaw surgery may improve your looks without leaving any marks. If you need to undergo one, contact us immediately via email or phone for more details.
