Different bone grafting techniques cater to various dental needs, each serving a unique purpose in promoting optimal oral health. This blog delves into the diverse array of bone grafting procedures and their significance in dental care.

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is a bone grafting procedure in the upper jaw. It is done when there is not enough bone height to support dental implants. A sinus lift involves lifting the sinus membrane and inserting bone graft material into the gap between the jaw and the sinus floor. This encourages new bone growth, increasing the bone density necessary for successful implantation.

Socket Preservation

Socket preservation is a bone grafting procedure performed immediately after tooth extraction. The surrounding bone may deteriorate after tooth removal due to lack of stimulation. The bone graft material is placed in the socket after a tooth extraction to preserve bone volume and density. This preserves the natural contour of the jawbone and facilitates future dental implant placement.

Ridge Augmentation

Socket preservation is performed at the same time as tooth extraction, while ridge augmentation is done after bone resorption has already taken place. The bone grafting material is implanted in the affected area to provide scaffolding for new bone growth.

Nerve Repositioning

Nerve repositioning is a specialized bone grafting technique performed in the lower jaw. It is required when placing dental implants in the posterior mandibular region, where the nerve responsible for sensation in the lower lip and chin (inferior alveolar nerve) may interfere with implant placement. During this procedure, the nerve is carefully moved aside, and bone graft material is inserted to create a protective barrier between the nerve and the implants. This ensures the safety of the nerve while providing adequate bone support for successful implant integration.

Dental bone grafting is crucial in restoring oral health and function, enabling patients to enjoy a confident smile. Call us today to find out what bone grafting can do for you!
