What Is Outer Ear Reconstruction?

Your ears might be deformed or damaged due to congenital anomalies, trauma, or cancer treatment. Some people have overly large or small ears because of genetic or developmental factors. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon can resolve the issue through an outer ear reconstruction procedure.

Types of Outer Ear Reconstruction

The outer ear, also called the pinna or auricle, is relatively sensitive and prone to irregularities, particularly after birth. An OMS surgeon can correct these deformities using different kinds of outer ear reconstruction procedures, depending on the type of anomaly.

The three primary reconstructive ear procedures include microtia repair, otoplasty, and ear defect repair. Microtia repair is a procedure that reconstructs malformed or underdeveloped ears resulting from congenital deformities, while otoplasty repositions and reshapes prominent ears. Ear defect repair corrects damage caused by trauma, burns, and surgical injuries.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Outer Ear Reconstruction?

The ideal candidate is anyone with missing, underdeveloped, or prominent ears. Outer ear reconstruction can also help if you have burnt, damaged, or folded ears. While the procedure does not treat hearing loss, it can help restore your hearing when combined with other treatments.

What To Expect During Outer Ear Reconstruction?

Outer ear reconstruction is a complex procedure that involves a team of otolaryngologists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Your OMS surgeon will review your medical records and conduct several tests, including a physical exam and X-rays, to determine your candidacy for the procedure.

Ear reconstruction might require up to four office visits, based on the recommended procedure. Your OMS surgeon may reconstruct an ear with a medical implant or rib cartilage before positioning the ear framework at the appropriate site. Some patients might require an artificial ear anchored into the ear site bone.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovering from outer ear reconstruction surgery depends on the procedure. Some patients might require several weeks, while others need a few months to heal. Refrain from strenuous activities to expedite recovery.
