At What Age Can You Get Jaw Surgery

Posted on 3/15/2024 by Weo Admin

Why Should You Wait Till Late Adolescence for Jaw Surgery

It is recommended that you wait for puberty to come to an end before considering jaw surgery. During puberty, the body goes through a lot of changes, and there is a great risk that disproportionate facial growth can occur.

Though it is difficult to accurately determine when facial growth has completely stopped, research shows that little change occurs after puberty. According to the ARC Journal of Forensic Science, this is about 15 years in girls and 17 years in boys. After this age, any facial deformities will be more precisely identified since little change is expected.

When incomplete or slow growth is detected, surgery should be delayed until early in the twenties. Your surgeon should be open and honest about this to prevent taking your child through surgery while they are still developing.

When Can I Get Jaw Surgery Before Adolescence

Some conditions warrant jaw surgery even before growth is complete. Chronological age is just one of the considerations when determining the best time for jaw surgery. Fractures, congenital disabilities, and jawbone disorders may necessitate surgery even at an early age.

Some jawbone disorders that necessitate prompt surgical correction include periodontitis (gum disease), dental abscess, osteonecrosis, osteoporosis, and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). These disorders cause pain and discomfort, and waiting for adolescence is not advisable. Also, there is a risk of these disorders getting worse over time, and prompt surgical correction is advised.

Can I Get Jaw Surgery in My Old Age?

Older adults can also get jaw surgeries, though the need for jaw surgeries after the age of 60 significantly decreases. This is because most viable candidates already had these corrective surgeries in their youth or middle age. Jaw surgery for the elderly comes with a unique set of challenges and risks, considering that at this age, the jaws are harder and very slow to heal. Other degenerative disorders may make surgery at an elderly age riskier. Proper physical and medical assessment is needed when it comes to jaw surgeries for elders.
