Dentures are made to feel and look like natural teeth restoring your appearance and health. These dentures are made of porcelain. Nowadays, they are often made of acrylic resin for their transparency features and durability. There is more to know about these dentures but let us first dig into what you need to know.

Dentures need relining and maintenance in the course of time

As time goes by dentures tend to wear and tear. Due to bone loss in the jawbone, the dentures might also be prone to sagging. Therefore, a regular check-up for maintenance purposes is important, after every 2-3 months. Relining is a restoration procedure that involves reshaping the dentures to make gaps or bridges between teeth. It is also done to enable them to sit comfortably on the gums.

Practice eating and talking to adjust

Getting used to dentures can be challenging. This is because you need to practice how to eat and talk all over again. As much as the process takes time to get used to, with time one can get back to normal oral functioning in no time. It is advisable therefore to start by practicing slowly, how to speak, start with soft food when it comes to eating and with time you will gradually improve to a variety of foods. The food you eat should also be sliced into small pieces to enable you to get used to chewing with the new dentures in place. You are recommended to eat mashed food; they are easier to chew and do not cause any friction or irritation to the gums.

Maintain good oral hygiene

You may think that having a new set of teeth in your mouth may not need taking care of, especially since they are not natural. That is not true, however, just as natural teeth, artificial teeth need to be taken care of. This is the time you need to take care of your oral health even more, they are made of artificial synthetics therefore they are also prone to tartar. Maintaining good oral health by regularly brushing your teeth with denture cleaners and not any other toothpaste. During brushing, you are advised to use a soft brush so as not to wear away the dentures.
