Antibiotics For Oral Health

Antibiotics For Oral HealthOral health is crucial in maintaining one's overall condition optimal. Tooth infections, dental caries, and cavities are some of the infections that cause pain and discomfort to pain during their daily routines. When one gets infected in the mouth, the dentist recommends antibiotics as the infection causes swelling and sensitivity around the affected area.

Antibiotics enhance the fight against the bacteria causing the infection; hence they are more preferred over some over-the-counter pain relievers. When the infections are left unattended, they become severe to risk a tooth or even a set of teeth. Moreover, some infections end up affecting other body organs, such as the brain, which has detrimental implications for one's life.

When are Antibiotics Recommended?

In most cases, antibiotics are prescribed by the dentist when in need to prevent the spread of infections outside of the oral cavity, especially during oral procedures. Additionally, antibiotics may be prescribed to curb infections that do not necessarily require other interventions such as root canals or extractions.

However, when the dentist can treat the infected area without needing antibiotics, they are completely removed from the equation. The shortcoming of antibiotics is the ability of bacteria to develop resistance against them. In line with such developments, dentists tend to prescribe antibiotics only when needed.

Penicillin Class of Antibiotics

Penicillin and amoxicillin are the most used penicillin-type of antibiotics to curb tooth infections. Though they are famously prescribed, some patients have allergies to them. If you experience allergic reactions to these antibiotics, it's always wise enough to let your dentist know.

Clindamycin

Clindamycin antibiotics drugs are effective medications against bacteria-causing infections. Their advantages over the penicillin class of drugs are the inability of bacteria to resist their treatment.

Azithromycin

Azithromycin drugs effectively offer solutions to dental infections as they halt bacteria growth. Although they offer alternatives to other classes of dental antibiotics, they are mostly recommended in events where patients show signs of allergy to penicillin and clindamycin antibiotics.
