I Always Have Dry Mouth. Is There A Cure?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
I Always Have Dry Mouth. Is There A Cure? Many people suffer from the dry mouth; in fact, research shows that 10% of adults, and up to 25% of older adults, suffer from dry mouth. While dry mouth is an inconvenience for many, it can also be hard on your teeth and gums. If you suffer from dry mouth, here is some information you need to know.

Why Do I Have Dry Mouth?

There may be several reasons you suffer from dry mouth. The older an adult is, the drier their mouths tend to be naturally. That's because the older you are, the less saliva you produce. Saliva is what makes your mouth moist, and it also helps you wash bacteria out of your mouth.

You may also have a dry mouth because of medication. Some medications, such as medication for allergies, asthma, and high blood pressure, have dry mouth as a side effect. Over-the-counter medication for nausea, allergies, colds, and sinus congestion also has a drying effect.

As with a lot of health-related things, you may suffer from dry mouth because of genetics. In other words, you may have inherited dry mouth from your parents or grandparents. No matter what the cause of your dry mouth is, there are remedies.

What to Try

To combat your dry mouth, you may want to look for products that contain xylitol. Xylitol helps encourage the body to produce more saliva. Also, you can drink more water to help combat dry mouth, and you need to avoid caffeine. One of the side effects of caffeine intake is dry mouth.

If you are still having issues with dry mouth, you should speak with a dentist. Dentists are concerned about dry mouth because it can lead to bacteria buildup- which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. They may also be able to recommend ideas for your dry mouth you haven't tried.
