What Are the Various Kinds of Reconstructive Surgery?

Posted on 2/20/2023 by Pacific Maxillofacial Center
What Are the Various Kinds of Reconstructive Surgery?“Reconstructive” means rebuilding or repairing something after being destroyed or damaged. Reconstructive surgery helps in restoring the body's function or form. It primarily treats congenital disabilities like palate or cleft lip and defects as a result of injuries or diseases. Reconstructive surgery enhances self-esteem, gives a better way of life, and improves body functionality. There are different types of reconstructive surgeries, as discussed below:

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is for women who have extra-large breasts or those who have undergone a mastectomy. The surgery restores breasts to normal size, shape, appearance, and symmetry. It helps women to go back to their healthy lives, more so after cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Facial Surgery

The surgery helps rectify facial defects like palate or cleft lip, infections, or breathing problems. Palate and cleft lip repair to children has brought smiles to many parents and little angels living in distress due to these disorders.

Foot and Hand Surgery

Different diseases can lead to hand impairment, hence the need for hand surgery. These diseases can impair or cause pain in the fingers and wrists, affecting flexibility and strength. On the other hand, foot surgery is ideal for treating extra toes, tumours, and other birth abnormalities.

Tissue Expansion

Tissue expansion is the procedure of growing extra skin on various body parts. It is mainly carried out in breast reconstruction following the breast removal process.

Skin Cancer Removal

Reconstructive surgery plays a vital role in removing any cancerous growth on the skin. It helps to preserve your appearance and health and prevent further spreading to other body parts.

Scar Revision

Scar revision is essential as it helps it match with the surrounding skin for enhanced appearance. The scars could be due to injuries from accidents and infections.
