What Is Periodontal Disease?

This is a condition that affects the tissues holding teeth in place. It is frequently brought on by bad flossing and brushing practices which allow plaque to accumulate on the teeth and harden. If left untreated, it can result in tooth loss and other gum complications.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is at risk from several factors. Smoking is one of the factors as it can reduce the effectiveness of gum disease treatments. Various conditions, such as AIDS, associated treatments, and genetic predisposition, are also risk factors.

Bacteria that live in our mouths create a sticky plaque on teeth that is combined with other particles. This substance can be removed through brushing and flossing. Unremoved plaque can harden into "tartar" that becomes hard to clean by brushing. This can only be removed by a dentist during a professional cleaning.

There are several observable symptoms brought about by this condition. You can experience unpleasant, never-ending breath, red or swollen lips, and bleeding gums. One may also experience chewing that hurts. It may also result in missing teeth. Gums that are receding or teeth that look longer may also be observed.

Diagnosis

An oral surgeon does the following: he looks for any inflammation in the gums. He also checks for and measures any pockets around the teeth using a small ruler called a "probe." The dentist can also ascertain any illnesses or risk factors that may be involved in the development of gum disease by asking about your medical history.

Treatment

Depending on the severity of the gum disease, different treatment options may be necessary. Any sort of treatment requires the patient to maintain appropriate daily care at home. The dentist could also advise altering certain habits, such as quitting smoking.
